New strategic direction for Newhaven College
2 min read

This week, Newhaven College presented its new strategic direction to the school community. Entitled Hearts & Minds, it has been developed after many months of consultation and is intended to guide the school into the next phase of its journey.

Hearts & Minds intentionally has the student at its centre. It is designed with future students and graduates in mind and aims to provide the best possible environment for learning and growth. Hearts & Minds is built around five keys that are the school’s priorities: Learning, Care, Community, Sustainability and Innovation. Together they will direct the future and enable each student to flourish.

The document complements Newhaven College’s newly developed Vision and Mission statements.

Vision: Inspire young people with knowledge, empathy and curiosity to engage in their world with confidence and a sense of purpose.

Mission: To be a thriving learning community where young people are thoughtful, caring, and courageous. We strive to provide personalised learning experiences which stem from authentic relationships and a deep connection to our unique environment. In doing so we aim to instil high expectations, promote innovation and encourage critical thinking.

These Vision and Mission statements, along with the strategic direction, will serve to steer Newhaven College as they strive to become the best school of its kind. These important documents articulate the aspirations the College holds for its students, staff and community, the ideals by which they operate, and the thinking that shapes their most important task – educating the next generation of Newhaven College students.

“Hearts & Minds builds on our school’s proud values and traditions but is firmly focused on the future,” said Principal Tony Corr.

“Its objectives will direct our planning and decisions now and in the coming years. In collaboration with the community, it provides an exciting blueprint for the future of Newhaven College.”

Newhaven College’s Director of Learning, Karen Milkins-Hendry has been an integral part of the process.

“Every conversation has helped provide a variety of insights to lead us to consistently enact our vision. Deeply know each young person. Honour and enrich their unique learning path,” she says.

“I see the various learning partnerships between five-year-olds through to 18-year-olds, with a diverse staff seeking to build relationships in myriad ways. The major lesson that keeps repeating is that all learning is through wellbeing.”

Hearts & Minds outlines a new era for Newhaven College – building on the school’s proud values and traditions but firmly focused on the future.

To accompany this new era is a new look for the school with a refreshed visual identity. It reflects the College’s place and character. The original Newhaven College crest and motto are still part of the school’s identity. The original Royal Spoonbill, drawn by renowned ornithologist Graham Pizzey, the ecumenical symbol of a cross in a boat and the scroll inscribed with the school motto ‘In Quietness and Confidence Shall Be Your Strength’ (Isaiah 30:15), still being an important connection to Newhaven College’s origins. The new look branding is simpler, lighter and more contemporary while still embracing the past.
