Mary MacKillop Regional College provides quality Catholic education and has a strong focus on student wellbeing and the development of the whole person. Students are encouraged to take ownership, think deeply, make connections and be courageous.
One of the many activities at the school is the annual Walkathon, part of the college’s Social Justice program, which provides students with the opportunity to acknowledge and explore issues in the local and global community.
Now in its 24th year, the Walkathon raises money for a number of charities chosen by the Social Justice Captains. Each year it aims to raise $20,000, with students signing up for an 11km walk from Koonwarra back to Leongatha.
Students find sponsors for their walk and each class organises a fundraiser at school – from delicious food stalls to car washes!
This year’s event, held on August 8 was an outstanding success.
The students and staff were enthusiastic and joined in the spirit of the day. The day commenced with a celebration of the Eucharist, followed by games led by the Justice Captains.
All the students were transported to Koonwarra where they commenced the 11km walk along the rail trail, before a lap of the town and back down Horn Street to the College. The students were welcomed back to the college with a BBQ and then played a fun game of netball with the staff.
This year, the sponsored charities are: Project Kenya, Disabled Surfers Association, Shepherds Table, MacKillop Today and Trinity Families.
