Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards

For over 30 years Newhaven College has supported students to complete the internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Recently, seventy-six young Victorians were celebrated for their outstanding achievements, receiving the prestigious Gold Award at The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award Ceremony held at Melbourne Town Hall.

The Gold Awards were presented by Scott Chapman, CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria. This ceremony acknowledges the dedication of students who have excelled in the highest levels of the program, commemorating up to three years of commitment across service, physical recreation, skills, an adventurous journey and a residential project.

The Gold Award is the world’s leading youth achievement accolade, helping young people discover their purpose, passion and place in the world. Operating in over 120 countries, with more than eight million participants globally, the award has engaged over 775,000 young Australians in the past 63 years.

Research has demonstrated that the award enhances young people’s educational attainment, employability, health and well-being, social inclusion, civic participation and environmental awareness.

“Each participant’s journey is unique but one thing that is clear is that the award provides a practical framework for young Victorians to learn essential life skills and enhance their educational and employment opportunities,” said Sue Lloyd-Williams AO, Chairman of the Board of Award in Victoria.

Gold Awardees that were recognised completed their award through a diverse range of over 30 government and independent schools and community organisations from around the state.
Representing Newhaven College was student Hamish Scothern.

‘’I recently completed a Duke of Ed kayaking camp on Lake Eildon, and it was an incredible experience,” Hamish said.

“The clean water and amazing natural surroundings provided a perfect setting for adventure and learning, as we navigated the lake's waters. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature, build relationships and physically challenge yourself.

“These types of outdoor activities, in my opinion, are vital for growth as a person and developing an awareness of environmental responsibility.’’

These sentiments align with the overall experience of this year’s Gold Awardees.

The majority expressed positive sentiments about the program’s impact on their life and opportunities. Surveys revealed that 86 per cent of Gold Awardees believed the award expanded their opportunities, providing early access to university, influencing their career paths, or developing skills to enhance employability.

Year 11 student Mackenzie Wain also received her Gold Award this year.

Mackenzie has recently joined the Australian Defence Force and has been in training over the past few months at in Kapooka near Wagga Wagga. The College is very proud of Mackenzie’s achievements while a student at Newhaven College.

The award program will continue in 2024 and beyond.
