
An SOS in the holidays to former Cowes Primary principal Sue Becker saw her back in the classroom on Monday, holding the fort for Tony Hornsby, a grade six teacher, as he recovers from a recent operation. Sue is welcomed back to school by principal Rod McKenzie.

Prep parents farewelling their youngsters after settling them into the classroom for the first time on Monday were treated to a Tears and Cheers session at Cowes Primary before heading home. Doing the honours were (from left) Annie Duyker, the school’s Education Support Officer, whose son Alex was also starting at Cowes on Monday (but as a teacher), Tuppy Cleeland (volunteer) and school mum Lucy Kennedy, who was a Cowes preppie herself a number of decades ago.

First day nerves were non-existent for this happy group of preps at Cowes: Heidi, Bonnie, Lucy and Augie.

It was a red-letter day in the McKenzie household on Monday morning, with Isla, daughter of Cowes Primary principal Rod McKenzie, off to school for the first time with her proud dad.

Cowes Primary School welcomed six new staff members to the school in 2023. From left: Taylah Smith (Prep), Alex Duyker (Year 3), Dylan Wilson-Browne (Year 4), Elyse Wood (Year 1) and Grace Elkins (Year 6), Absent when photo was taken is Maria Petrovic (Year 2). Monday represented a type of homecoming for two of the new teachers. Alex and Dylan both attended Cowes Primary School as students.
