Member for Bass, Jordan Crugnale, has been caught up in an anti-vax hoax circulating on social media.
In an anonymous audio recording circulating on social media, a woman said the state government is introducing a policy to stop Medicare for anyone without a vaccination.
The woman claimed to be just off the phone from Ms Crugnale, and Labor MP, Darren Cheeseman (the member for South Barwon), and that a policy where unvaccinated people were going to be stripped of healthcare rights was “100 per cent going through”.
The ABC said the recording had been posted in large groups on Telegram and discussed on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Both Ms Crugnale and Mr Cheeseman told the ABC Fact Check the recording was a hoax and the claims were “quite frankly ridiculous”.
“The Victorian Government will never limit access to healthcare based on vaccination status,” the MPs told the ABC.
Medicare is legislated under the Federal Health Insurance Act 1973, and is the responsibility of the Federal government. That legislation cannot be amended by any state government.
