Ventnor school celebrates 100th anniversary
1 min read

In September, the Ventnor State School 3895 celebrates its 100th anniversary, and planning is well underway for a special occasion.

The celebration will be held on Sunday, September 11 at the school, at 2pm.

Organiser Julie Box said the present owners, the Syme Family, have kindly invited the community to meet for a photo with the original school sign … and in the same position as the original opening photograph.

“We shall go inside for afternoon tea and the sharing of some school stories and maybe a few concert items from long ago,” Julie said.

“I hope former students of Ventnor and their descendants can join us on this special day.”

In November 1920, it was proposed a deputation of Mrs Sarah Harris, Mr P G Dixon, A K T Sambell and Mr George Jeffery visit the Minister for Education for the purpose of getting a school built on land owned by Mr Tom Jones, on the corner of Ventnor Road and Ventnor Beach Road.

After much hard work and negotiations, a school was erected in 1922 on the three-acre corner site purchased from Mr Jones.

The new school was opened on September 5, 1922, after functioning in the Ventnor hall across the road for seven years.

The opening was the largest gathering Ventnor had ever seen.
