Cape Woolamai Coast Action (CWCA) recently received a Quick Response Grant from Bass Coast Shire Council to enable the group to undertake a Weed Mapping Survey of the Cape Woolamai Foreshore.

The Weed Mapping was undertaken by Botanist Claire Ranyard and her partner Mike Maio over a period of three months and resulted in the geo-location of 7212 invasive and problematic weed species between Cleeland Track and Palm Beach Avenue in Cape Woolamai.

Of these the most invasive and problematic plant was the Polygala myrtifolia (Myrtle Leaf Milkwort), with 4027 sightings and Asparagus asparagoides (Bridal Creeper), with 2776 sightings.

These are both species that have escaped from residential gardens along the foreshore.

The results of the findings will allow the members of the CWCA to more efficiently utilize their working bees to target specific areas.

Each of the geo-locations includes the specific GPS co-ordinates which will make it easier to efficiently target the problem areas and improve the indigenous biodiversity of the foreshore.

CWCA said they were grateful to council for the grant, providing a unique opportunity to approach and resolve this problem.
