Phillip Island is the proud home of Victoria's first and only National Surfing Reserve. The working group that helps care for it is calling for new members with a passion for surfing and preserving the coastal environment.
Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve was declared in March 2013 for the surfers of yesterday, today and tomorrow and celebrates the island's surfing culture and classic waves.
The Reserve recognises the island's outstanding surf, together with the long rich surf culture and history. It is made up of four sites: Cape Woolamai, Smiths Beach, Summerland Beach and Cat Bay.
The community was instrumental in establishing the Surfing Reserve. Since its establishment a dedicated working group has worked to promote and protect the reserve, its values, surfing and its history and cultural significance for Phillip Island.
The group is comprised of representatives from Phillip Island Nature Parks, Bass Coast Shire Council, Phillip Island Boardriders Club, Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Plastic Free Phillip Island, Traditional Owners and community members.
The group has worked on initiatives such as creating and installing signage and monuments and running events to celebrate surfers of all ages, styles and abilities, including the popular Surfing Teams Challenge.
Members also develop and maintain an archive of the island's surfing history dating back to the 1920s. The relaxed, fun and friendly working group meets between six and 10 times per year.
"Phillip Island Nature Parks has proudly assisted the establishment and operation of the reserve since its inception and is delighted to be involved in this great community initiative," said Catherine Basterfield, Phillip Island Nature Parks CEO.
"The strength of the ongoing success of the Reserve has been the community passion and hard work and I encourage new members to get on board."
