Community
Melaleuca eyes future improvements

The Management Committee of Melaleuca is looking for community input on the future needs of the community.

Melaleuca is a not-for-profit community organisation situated in the heart of Cowes. The voluntary committee of management run an Aged Care facility, social housing units, and independent living units, and provide safe and reliable housing options for those entering the third age.

“The Management Committee is currently identifying key elements for future redevelopment and improvement of its current facilities,” a Melaleuca spokesperson said.

“This includes developing new social housing and independent living options, as well as identifying improvements to the existing Aged Care.

“The Phillip Island community is changing, and to better adapt to the needs and desires of our future residents, we are looking for feedback that will inform an options analysis for consideration by the committee. This is in the form of a survey that should take no more than 10 minutes.

“Specifically, we are looking for people who require social housing, aged care, or independent living units in Cowes over the next five to10 years, either for themselves or for their family.

“This includes those who are not considering Melaleuca as an option. All feedback would be appreciated, as it will inform the committee and assist their decision making.”

The origin of Melaleuca is very much about the grass roots history of Cowes.  It was driven by locals and created through hard work, with community spirit and a sense of service at the forefront of every decision.

Bill’s Book Shed has been a destination for years, with locals and tourists browsing and buying from a huge range of pre-loved books. Scores of Cowes Primary students have had ‘buddies’ at Melaleuca, which has provided them with a tangible link to the history of their community. And many locals have worked and volunteered at the facility.

Melaleuca has served the community exceptionally well. It is a true not-for-profit, with all excess funds reinvested into growing the facility to provide better services, facilities, and opportunities for the Phillip Island community.

A local consulting firm, Videre Consulting, is assisting in the master plan, and have developed a short survey monkey form, which can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/r/GCFLVHP
