A 70th celebration

Norris and Elsie Gresham celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Mario's Restaurant in San Remo this month, surrounded by their family.

The happy couple met at the Lido Ballroom Dance Studio in Collins Street Melbourne, where Norry danced and taught five to six days per week - in addition to his day job.

Norry was immediately interested, but Elsie thought he was a bit loud and over enthusiastic. Clearly persistence pays off as they married on October 9, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Richmond.

The young newlyweds moved around, but eventually bought land and built a house at Wonga Park, later moving to Wandin North, Ringwood and finally settling at Phillip Island nearly 40 years ago. Elsie worked at Rose lodge, then Griffiths Point Lodge for 12 years prior to retiring. Norry worked at Rodane Hardware in Wonthaggi for a few years after the move, whilst renovating the family home.

Retirement is full of activity, with Norry assisting with the initial set up of the Men's Shed in Cowes, sourcing equipment donations and keeping an eye on the actual setup.

Norry continues his association with the RSL, but with the more social aspects of the monthly servicemen's morning get together and as a venue for the Probus Aviation Group.

Elsie loved the line dancing that she did for 15 years and was an active member of the local Country Women's Association, initially at Grantville then for 12 years at the Cowes Branch. Elsie and Norry were foundation members of the Cowes Probus Club and continue to enjoy many of the associated activities, such as the Wine Appreciation Group outings.

When asked about the secret to this longevity, the happy couple responded "support, understanding and love".
