
In the days before the Phillip Island San Remo bridge was built, there was only one way to get the circus to town. And that was on one of the island’s trusty car ferries. The elephants pictured here were from Perry Brothers Circus Zoo, and came over on the ferry Narrabeen somewhere between 1928 and 1932. It was the last circus to tour with elephants, ceasing in late 2011.

The Perry circus, complete with elephants, arrives somewhat unconventionally in Cowes.

Once a bridge connected Phillip Island to the mainland, circus elephants travelled across the bridge in style.
