Island Ward candidate: Marnie Chadwick
2 min read

Growing up on Phillip Island has given me a deep understanding of the community's growth and ever-changing needs, which I now witness through the eyes of an adult. My diverse work background in administration, finance, event organisation, and environmental restoration has enhanced my adaptability and skillset.

However, it is parenting my two neurodiverse tweens as a sole parent for the past 14 years that has truly shaped my perspective and priorities. The events my family has faced throughout this time has been challenging to say the least.  Experiencing financial, physical, mental health struggles, as well as trauma, along with many highs and lows. We met these with resilience, leading to deep personal growth and invaluable life experiences. I am excited to broaden my understanding of council, motivated by my deep love, compassion, and commitment to the Island community and environment.

Transparency and accountability:
Building a solid connection between the council and community is crucial for our region. The possibility of adapting a transparency hub, inspired by successful implementations in other forward-thinking councils, we have the opportunity to create an environment of openness and trust. Facilitating healthy in-person community meetings can serve as a crucial avenue for addressing local concerns, promoting discussions, and initiating collaborative efforts towards positive change.

Recreation reserve:
We are currently at a crucial point to move forward with the 80 acres of land, Hilton Chadwick Reserve, into an exciting hub of recreational activities and mental health facilities. Forty acres has already been rezoned from farm to recreation, our focus now shifts to the remaining forty acres awaiting rezoning, from farm to recreation. It is imperative that we act now ensuring a more foreseeable timeline and perpetuity for this generation and our future. The community can't wait another 20 years; a new timeline is vital.

History:
Bass Coast Shire is at a critical point, where the voices of its community members need to be heard and valued. It's time to prioritise the preservation and showcasing of our rich historical heritage by displaying historical items from the original Cultural Centre, at Berninneit. Honouring our past and exhibiting pride in the history of Phillip Island Shire and recognising the efforts of past council members is crucial for grasping our past and adapting to current situations.

Coastline
As an island, our coastline holds invaluable beauty and uniqueness. Sustaining a diverse ecosystem, habitat and wildlife must be protected at all costs. It is imperative that we remain firm in our commitment to preserving and protecting the delicate balance of our environment and development. Especially Silverleaves, at this present moment. Due to climate change and the foreshore, it is especially important the shire ensure sensitive, secure planning, commitment and sustainability for the future.

With a rich history that speaks volumes about the need to safeguard Phillip Island for its perpetuity, let's actively embrace this opportunity to work hand in hand, unite our voices, and together, build a more connected and vibrant community for all.
